TEN

Gunner

“Stop wiggling,” London scowled, trying for the tenth time to yank the comb through my hair.

“You’re pulling too hard,” I complained.

“You’re being a baby.” She yanked the comb again, just for emphasis.

I grunted, smacking her gently on the thigh. “Brat.”

“Asshole,” she shot back. “This is disgustingly long, Gunner. The ends are so far past split. And, am I supposed to chop some of it before I shave it? Your damn thick hair is going to break these clippers!”

“I don’t know.” I winced as she brushed her fingers through it harder than she needed to, and they got caught on the tangles. “Gently, babe. Gently.”

“I’m just going to go for it.” She huffed, turning the electric clippers on. I eyed them suspiciously. “Stop being a baby. You’ll survive.”

“I need some kind of tranquilizer for this,” I muttered, clenching my jaw as she lifted the clippers to the side of my head. “Shave it all. Every damn strand. I want to be bald.”

“Shut up, drama queen. No one’s head is that sensitive. I’m giving you the same haircut I always do, and you’re going to like it or I’m going to punch you in the balls.”

She went for it, and it was fucking excruciating. An hour later, though, I looked like my old self. She brushed hair off my shoulders and the back of my neck while I checked out the haircut.

“Damn, you’re lucky to have a mate this hot,” I remarked.

London snorted. “Am I?”

“Very lucky,” I confirmed. “I’ve got to shower… you want in?” I lifted an eyebrow, crossing my damn toes she’d say yes. After she gave me a haircut, she was usually just as hairy as me so we’d shower together.

“Not this time.” She picked a chunk of hair off my back and dropped it to the floor. When she stepped out of the bathroom, I shook hair off my shoulders before following her.

“You don’t have to shower with me, but we are sharing a room and bed. You’re my mate. You can go first, and I’ll enjoy the leftover scent of you while I scrub my body.” I purposefully left an innuendo there. London’s eye-roll told me she picked up on it—just like I intended her to.

“Rub yourself down all you want, babe. A little of my scent isn’t going to make it feel like this hand, these tits, or this vagina.” She continued walking, and I followed her. I was shirtless, wearing only my boxers, and hair was probably falling off me with every damn step.

“No, but it’ll help with the memories,” I said, voice low. “Remember that time you put your hand in my pants while we—”

A door opened across the hall, and London whirled around. I was so close to her that her hair whipped me in the face, shutting me up as we looked at my mom.

The sight of her—frail, with tired eyes—killed my mood.

“I’m so sorry to hear about your cancer, Jen.” London spoke first, and the words sounded genuine.

My mom didn’t say anything for a moment.
